It’s hard to believe that the 2010 Husky Hustle is already in the history books.  It seems that it was only yesterday that we were arranging the final details, stuffing the runners’ race bags, and praying for sunshine and a cooperative forecast.   We wanted to send a final email to wrap up the 2010 event.  Here are the notes you’ll see in this post:

  • Injury update
  • Race Winners
  • Pictures Needed
  • Ideas for the future?
  • A Big Thank You
  • 2011 Coordinator

Injury Update: As all of you who attended the event on April 30th know, there was an unfortunate accident involving two Heatherstone students as they arrived on the property prior to the race.  Heatherstone Principal, Dr. Ruth Waggoner, reported before the race began that the girls did not have life-threatening injuries.  We’ve learned that they’ll both be in leg casts for the next few weeks to help their broken legs heal.  They are back in school and that’s great news.  All of us send our best wishes to both and hope to see them around the neighborhood soon.

Race Winners: This year, approximately 590 runners participated in either the 5K or 1 Mile races. Congratulations to all the winners listed below.

Heatherstone Boys 5K Division: 1st – Aaron Murray (6th), 2nd – Conner Churchill (6th), 3rd – Aris Vinsant (5th)

Heatherstone Girls 5K Division: 1st – Kayla Goff (6th), 2nd – Meranda Tenove (6th), 3rd – Meredith Basham (3rd)

Open Division – Male Winner: Zack Darpinian; Female Winner: Valerie Thompson

1 Mile Fun Run/Walk: Boys’ Winner – Nathan Matlack; Girls’ Winner – Kristi Haas

Pictures Needed: If you took pictures at the event, we’d love to see them.  If you have just a few, you can send them as email attachments to the official event email address.  If you have a large number of photos taken throughout the event, perhaps you can save them to a disc and share with us.  We like to keep these photos on hand for possible use in the school yearbook and in our archives for the event.

Ideas for the future: Each year, this event seems to become bigger and better.  With the 2010 event still fresh in your mind, we’d like to hear your assessment.  What did you think?  What were the positive features and what are the areas where improvement is needed.  Are there things to add (like the return of the Silent Auction this year) or things to eliminate?  We’ve already made a short list and we’d like to add your ideas to it.  So if you want to share your thoughts, simply put them in an email to our event email address. These will all be collected and passed them on to the next committee chair.

A Big Thank You: There are so many people to thank for helping us organize and coordinate the 2010 Husky Hustle.  If we try to list them all, we’ll surely miss someone important.  So we would like to take this opportunity to just say ‘Thanks’ to everyone who helped to make the event a success.  With the unfortunate events that occurred prior to the start of the 5K race, the evening had potential to ‘go south’ in a hurry.  However, we appreciated that over 1200 people cooperated with us and the authorities to move and patiently wait for the emergency crews to do their job before we could start the race. This reminded us that we’re thankful to be residents of the Heatherstone neighborhood. Everyone shared a genuine concern for the injured girls and patiently supported the cause despite the delay.  In addition, the volunteer schedules were messed up, but there were lots of people who stepped in to take over and help to direct the races, keep the carnival games running, and to serve the catered meal.  So ‘Thanks’ for everything and we hope you had a good time.

Next Year’s Coordinator: This has been our final year to be the Fun Run Committee Chairs. Our youngest is leaving Heatherstone for the new California Trail Middle School.  Although we’ve worked hard to lead the effort these last two years, it’s been worth it as we’ve met and made new friends within the community and have seen the Husky Hustle grow into one of the most profitable and fun PTO fundraisers.  We’ve kept a lot of notes and have an electronic data base of information saved and ready to pass on to the next committee chair.  If you’re interested in this opportunity to serve Heatherstone School, please let us know.  We’ll be glad to review all of the many details of the operations with you and to give you some direction and timelines to help you out. (Believe it or not, it’s not too early to start thinking about this already!)  We’re confident that the next Fun Run Chair will find it to be as rewarding as we have, so we look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Thank you, and sincerely yours,

Mike and Ann Weiler
